In the heart of every Korean exists Han, a collective grief, anger, and deep sorrow.

Han flows from my Korean ancestors and in my blood. Han is a country’s identity being stripped by colonization, a bridge that divided families after war, and the grooves that carve the faces of my parents who hold these memories.

Han beats in my heart as a Korean American woman. I feel it rumbling in my soul each time I fight for space and belonging. I hear it whisper in my ears then roar to life when my dignity is unseen. I fall asleep with han in the darkness of the night and wake with han streaming through my windows.

“What do you want?” I ask, seeing han staring back at me in the mirror.

“Listen. Learn. Love.” she says.

And when I did, I was never the same.

From collective grief, anger, and deep sorrow, I came into existence. Han gives me strength, clarity, and beauty. In turning toward my han, I learned to love myself, rest my body, and heal my soul.

From collective grief, anger, and deep sorrow, my HAAPI community was born. Han is there as we lock eyes in understanding, embrace in silence, clink glasses, shed tears, share a meal, and laugh until our stomachs hurt.

Han is what grounds me to my past, fills my present with love, and looks toward the future with joy.

지은의 이야기

모든 한국인의 마음 깊은 곳에는 한이 존재한다. 이는 집단적인 슬픔, 분노, 그리고 깊은 슬픔을 의미한다.

한은 나의 한국의 선조로부터 내려온것이며 내 피에 흐르고있다. 한은 식민지에 의해 빼앗긴 나라의 정체성, 전쟁 이후 가족들을 나누어버린 다리, 그리고 나의 부모의 얼굴에 새겨진 기억들이다.

한은 한국계 미국 여성인나로서 나의 깊은 심장에서 뛰고있다. 매번 공간과 소속을 위해 싸울 때마다 나의 한이 영혼 속에서 울리는 것을느낀다.내 안에있는 한은 내귓가에서항상 속삭이며, 내 존엄성이 무시 당했을때 와락 쏟아져나온다. 나는 한으로 어둠속에서 잠이들고, 한이 나의 창문을 통해 흘러나올때 깨어난다.

“뭘 원해?” 라고 물어본다. 거울 속에서 내게 응시하는 한을 바라보며.

“듣고. 배우고. 사랑하라.” 그녀가 말한다.

그리고 나는 그렇게 했을 때, 더 이상 예전의 내가 아니었다.

집단적인 슬픔, 분노, 그리고 깊은 슬픔에서 나는 존재감을 느낀다.

한이란 나에게 있어서 힘, 분명함, 그리고 아름다움을 가져다준다.

나는 내 한을 향해 돌아서는과정으로 나 자신을 사랑하고 내몸을 쉬게 하며 내 영혼을 치유하는 법을 배웠다.

집단적인 슬픔, 분노, 그리고 깊은 슬픔에서 나의 HAAPI (한국계 아시아태평양 섬유 미국인) 공동체가 탄생하였다. 우리가 이해하며 눈을 마주치고, 침묵 속에서 포옹하고, 잔을기울이고, 눈물을 흘리며, 식사를 나누며, 배가아플때까지 웃을 때 한은 그곳에 존재한다.

한은 나를 나의 과거에 묶어주고, 현재를 사랑으로 가득 채우며, 미래를 기쁨으로 바라보게 만드는 것이다.
